How to download a YouTube video on Android with Fistty

You can do this on any Android phone: Samsung, Infinix, Tecno, itel, Xiaomi, Pixel, or anything else that runs Chrome. The steps are the same in 2026 as they were last year, because Fistty runs in the browser and does not depend on your Android version.

  1. Copy the video link. Open the YouTube app and play the video you want. Under the video title, tap the Share arrow. A sheet slides up from the bottom with a row of apps. Tap Copy link on the far left. If you are watching in Chrome instead of the app, tap the address bar, long-press the URL, and tap Copy.
  2. Open Fistty. Switch to Chrome (or Samsung Internet, Opera, or any browser) and go to fistty.com/youtube-video-downloader.
  3. Paste the link. Long-press inside the white box at the top of the page and tap Paste. The link should start with youtube.com/watch, youtu.be, or youtube.com/shorts.
  4. Tap Download. Fistty reads the video and shows you a list of formats. This usually takes two to five seconds.
  5. Choose a quality. You will see MP4 options such as 360p, 720p, and 1080p, plus an MP3 option if you only want the audio. Tap the one you want. For most phones, 720p is the best balance of sharpness and file size.
  6. Save the file. Chrome shows a small bar at the bottom that says Downloading. When it finishes, tap Open, or go to your Downloads folder. The video also appears in your Gallery or Google Photos app under the Downloads album.

That is the whole process. You never type a password, you never install anything, and you can repeat it as many times as you like.

Where the video goes on Android

This is the most common question we get, so here is exactly what to expect.

  • Chrome saves to Internal storage > Download. Open the Files app (or My Files on Samsung) and tap Downloads to see it.
  • Gallery picks up the file automatically on most phones. Look for an album called Download or Downloads. On Infinix, Tecno, and itel phones, the built-in Gallery app may take a minute to scan the folder. If it is not there yet, open the Files app and tap the video directly.
  • Samsung Internet saves to the same Download folder, but you can change this in Settings > Downloads > Save location if you prefer your SD card.
  • Opera Mini saves to Download as well, but if you have Opera’s data-saving mode on, large files sometimes fail. Switch it off for the download, then back on.

If you want the video in a specific folder, open the Files app, long-press the video, tap Move, and pick where it should live. You can also move it to an SD card this way to free up internal storage.

Which quality should you choose on a phone?

YouTube uploads come in many sizes, and Fistty shows you what is available for that video. Here is a practical guide for a phone screen.

Format Best for Approximate size for 5 minutes
360p MP4 Saving data, WhatsApp forwards, old phones 15–25 MB
720p MP4 Normal viewing on any phone screen 50–90 MB
1080p MP4 Casting to a TV, editing, large screens 100–200 MB
MP3 Music, podcasts, sermons, lectures 5–8 MB

Sizes vary a lot with the type of video. A talking-head video compresses well; a football match or a music video with fast cuts is much bigger. If you are on mobile data, pick 360p or 720p and download on Wi-Fi when you can. If you only want to listen, pick MP3 and save yourself the video weight entirely. Our guide on how to convert YouTube to MP3 online goes deeper on audio quality.

Fistty’s 1080p option is a real 1080p file, not an upscaled 720p. If a video was uploaded in 4K, you may also see higher options; they are large, so only pick them on Wi-Fi.

Tips for Android users

Use the Share menu as a shortcut

Instead of copying the link and switching apps, tap Share in YouTube and choose Chrome. The video page opens in Chrome. Tap the address bar, copy the URL, then open Fistty in a new tab and paste. It is one less switch between apps.

Add Fistty to your home screen

In Chrome, open the Fistty YouTube page, tap the three-dot menu, and tap Add to Home screen. You get an icon that opens the downloader directly, which feels like an app without taking up storage or asking for permissions.

Allow Chrome to store files

The first time you download, Chrome may ask for permission to access storage or to save the file. Tap Allow. If you tapped Deny by mistake, go to Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions > Files and media and switch it on.

Keep an eye on storage

Long 1080p videos can be 500 MB or more. On a 32 GB or 64 GB phone, that adds up quickly. Delete what you have watched, or move videos to an SD card using the Files app.

Private and members-only videos

If a video is set to Private, or is a members-only or paid video, no online tool can download it. Fistty will show an error instead of a file. This is normal and it protects creators. Unlisted videos work fine as long as you have the link.

What to do if the download fails

Most failures come down to one of four things.

  1. The link is wrong. Make sure you copied the video link, not a channel or playlist link. A video link contains watch?v=, youtu.be/, or /shorts/.
  2. Chrome blocked the file. Pull down the notification shade and look for a message that says Download blocked or Can’t download securely. Tap it and choose Download anyway, then check your storage permission as described above.
  3. Storage is full. Open Settings > Storage. If you have less than 1 GB free, clear some space and try again.
  4. Slow network. A long 1080p file on a weak 3G signal can time out. Pick a smaller quality or wait for Wi-Fi.

If none of those help, read our longer troubleshooting post, YouTube Video Won’t Download? 10 Fixes, which covers browser cache, data-saver mode, and more.

Is it allowed to download YouTube videos?

Downloading a video to watch offline for yourself is widely done and is generally fine for personal use. What you should not do is re-upload someone else’s video as your own, or use it in a way the creator did not allow. That can break YouTube’s rules and copyright law. If you create content and believe your work is being misused, Fistty responds to takedown notices on our DMCA page.

YouTube Premium also offers an official offline mode inside the YouTube app. It works well, but videos stay locked inside the app and disappear when your subscription ends. Fistty gives you a normal MP4 file you can keep, move, or share.
