YouTube Video Won’t Download? 10 Fixes

When a YouTube video is not downloading, the cause is usually a wrong link, a browser block, or full storage. These 10 fixes solve almost every case in a few minutes.

If your YouTube video is not downloading, the problem is almost always one of a few simple things: the link is not a video link, your browser blocked the file, your phone is out of space, or the video is private. Work through the 10 fixes below in order. Most people are downloading again by fix number four using Fistty’s YouTube downloader.

Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.

First, the normal way to download a YouTube video

Before troubleshooting, make sure you are following the steps that work. If you skipped one, that alone can be the cause.

  1. Copy the video link. In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video, then Copy link. In a browser, copy the URL from the address bar.
  2. Open Fistty. Go to fistty.com/youtube-video-downloader in any browser.
  3. Paste the link into the box at the top of the page.
  4. Tap Download and wait a few seconds for the format list.
  5. Choose MP4 or MP3 and a quality, such as 720p.
  6. Find the file. On Android it is in the Downloads folder and your Gallery. On iPhone it is in the Files app under Downloads, and you can save it to Photos from there.

If that did not work, start with fix 1 below.

10 fixes when a YouTube video won’t download

1. Check that you copied a video link

A working link contains watch?v=, youtu.be/, or /shorts/. If you copied a channel page, a playlist page, the YouTube home page, or a search result, the downloader has nothing to fetch. Go back to the video itself and copy again. Also check that nothing got cut off: a link that ends halfway through the video ID will fail.

2. Remove extra text around the link

When you share from the YouTube app to WhatsApp or a notes app and copy from there, you sometimes pick up the video title along with the URL. Paste only the part that begins with https://. Fistty tries to find the link inside pasted text, but a clean link is safest.

3. Confirm the video is public

Private videos, members-only videos, paid rentals, and live streams that have not finished cannot be downloaded by any online tool. Fistty never asks for your Google login, so it can only fetch what any visitor could watch. Open the link in a private or incognito tab. If YouTube asks you to sign in or says the video is unavailable, that is your answer. Unlisted videos are fine.

4. Look for a blocked download in your browser

This is the most common cause on Android. Chrome sometimes shows a small message in the notification shade that says Download blocked or File may be harmful. It is a generic warning Chrome shows for many media files. Pull down the shade, tap the notification, and choose Download anyway. On iPhone, Safari may show a popup asking Do you want to download this file? Tap Download. If you tapped Cancel, just tap the quality button on Fistty again.

5. Give your browser storage permission

On Android, if Chrome cannot write to storage, the download fails silently. Go to Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions and make sure Files and media (or Storage) is allowed. On Samsung Internet, the path is similar. Then try again.

6. Free up space on your phone

A 1080p video can be several hundred megabytes. If your phone has under 1 GB free, downloads stall or disappear. Check Settings > Storage, delete old videos and WhatsApp media, and retry. You can also pick 360p or 480p to get a much smaller file.

7. Turn off data saver and VPN for a moment

Data-saver modes in Opera Mini, Chrome Lite mode, and some phone-level data savers compress or hold large downloads. VPN apps can also break the connection to YouTube’s servers mid-file. Switch them off, download, then switch them back on.

8. Clear your browser cache or try another browser

A stale cache can make the Fistty page behave strangely, such as the Download button doing nothing. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data, tick Cached images and files, and clear. Or simply open Fistty in a different browser, such as Firefox or Samsung Internet. If it works there, the problem was the first browser.

9. Wait and try again for very new videos

When a creator uploads a video, YouTube takes time to process the higher qualities. For the first few minutes, only 360p may exist. If Fistty shows only a low quality or fails on a video posted moments ago, wait 10–30 minutes. The same applies to live streams that just ended.

10. Check your connection and retry on Wi-Fi

A long 1080p download on a weak 3G or congested 4G signal can time out. Move to a spot with a better signal, or wait for Wi-Fi. If you are in Nigeria on MTN, Airtel, or Glo, downloads are often faster late at night, and a night bundle makes large files cheaper. Pick 720p or lower on mobile data.

Device-specific notes

Android

Files go to Internal storage > Download. If the Gallery does not show the video, open the Files app and tap it directly. For brand-specific steps, see how to download YouTube videos on Android phones.

iPhone

Safari saves to the Files app, not Photos. Open Files > On My iPhone > Downloads, tap the video, tap the Share icon, and tap Save Video. If Safari downloads are going to iCloud Drive and you are out of iCloud space, change the location in Settings > Safari > Downloads to On My iPhone. The full walkthrough is in how to download YouTube videos on iPhone.

Desktop

Chrome, Edge, and Firefox save to your Downloads folder. If nothing happens, check whether a pop-up blocker or an ad blocker is stopping the file. Fistty does not need pop-ups, but some blockers are aggressive with any download that opens a new tab.

Why Fistty is a good place to start

Many downloader sites fail because they are overloaded, redirect you to fake “Download” buttons, or ask you to install an extension. Fistty is a plain website: paste, tap, save. It does not ask for a login or password, does not add its own watermark, and works on any browser in 2026. If it does fail, it is usually one of the ten reasons above, and the fix is on your side of the screen. If a download still will not work after all ten, the video is probably restricted in a way that no online tool can get around.

One last reminder: downloading for your own offline viewing is generally fine. Re-uploading someone else’s video as yours is not, and you can read our DMCA policy if you have a concern about your own content.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my YouTube video not downloading?

The most common causes are a link that is not a video link, a browser download block, full phone storage, or a private video. Check the link first, then look for a blocked download notice in your browser.

Why does Chrome say the download was blocked?

Chrome shows a generic warning for many media files. Pull down the notification shade, tap the message, and choose Download anyway. Also check that Chrome has storage permission.

Can I download a private YouTube video?

No. Private, members-only, and paid videos cannot be downloaded by any online tool. Fistty never asks for your login, so it can only fetch public and unlisted videos.

Why is only 360p available for a new video?

YouTube processes higher qualities after upload. Wait 10 to 30 minutes and try again; 720p and 1080p usually appear once processing finishes.

Where did my YouTube download go on iPhone?

Safari saves it to the Files app under Downloads. Open the file, tap Share, then Save Video to move it to Photos.

Does Fistty need an app or login to download YouTube videos?

No. Fistty is a free website. Paste the link, tap Download, and choose a quality. Nothing is installed and no password is requested.
