For an Instagram profile picture download, open the profile, tap the three dots at the top right, tap Copy profile URL (or copy the instagram.com/username link from your browser), paste it into Fistty’s Instagram downloader, and tap Download. Fistty fetches the full-size profile photo that Instagram stores, not the tiny circle you see in the app. This works for public accounts, and the photo belongs to the person who posted it, so keep it for personal use.
Below you will find the exact steps, why the app only shows a small version, what size you really get, how to save your own profile photo, and what to do when a profile does not work.
Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.
How to download an Instagram profile picture on Fistty
- Open the profile. In the Instagram app, search for the account or tap the username on any post. You should see the round profile picture at the top with the post count, followers, and following numbers next to it.
- Copy the profile link. Tap the three dots at the top right of the profile page. On the menu that appears, tap Copy profile URL. On some versions the menu says Share this profile, and then Copy link. Instagram shows a short “Link copied” message. The link looks like instagram.com/username.
- Open Fistty’s Instagram downloader. Switch to your browser and go to fistty.com/download-instagram-videos-and-photos. No app to install, no login, and Fistty never asks for your Instagram password.
- Paste the link and tap Download. Tap inside the box, paste the profile link, and tap Download. Fistty reads the public profile and shows the profile picture as a preview.
- Tap Download on the photo. Fistty gives you the largest version Instagram has for that profile picture. There is only one size option for profile photos, so there is nothing else to choose.
- Find the file. On Android, the photo lands in the Downloads folder and appears in Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves it to the Files app under Downloads; open it, tap the share icon, and tap Save Image to move it to Photos.
The whole thing takes under a minute. If you also want the person’s public posts, the same Fistty page handles them; see our guide on downloading Instagram photos and carousels.
Why Instagram shows profile pictures so small
In the app, a profile picture is a circle about 150 pixels wide on the profile page and even smaller in the feed and comments. Instagram does this on purpose. The profile picture is meant as an identity marker, not a photo to view. Unlike posts, there is no tap-to-expand on another person’s profile picture. If you tap it, Instagram opens their story (if they have one) or does nothing.
The common workaround is to zoom in with two fingers and take a screenshot. That gives you a blurry, pixelated image because you are enlarging a 150-pixel thumbnail. The full-size version does exist on Instagram’s servers; the app just never shows it to you. Fistty requests that larger file directly, which is why the download is sharp where a screenshot is not.
What size is a full-size Instagram profile picture?
When someone uploads a profile picture, Instagram crops it to a square and stores it at several sizes. The largest stored version is usually 320 by 320 pixels, with some accounts (especially those uploading from a computer or with high-quality uploads enabled in 2026) storing a version around 1080 by 1080. Fistty fetches the largest one available for the account.
| Where you see it | Size Instagram serves | Looks sharp when |
|---|---|---|
| Comments and feed | About 40 to 50 px | Never, on its own |
| Profile page | About 150 px | Only as a small circle |
| Screenshot after zooming | 150 px stretched | Never |
| Fistty download | 320 px to 1080 px (largest stored) | Full screen on a phone |
A profile picture can never be larger than what the person uploaded. If someone set a small or low-quality image as their profile photo, the full-size download will reflect that. Fistty does not upscale or sharpen images; it gives you the original file.
How to save your own Instagram profile picture
If the profile picture you want is your own, you have two routes.
Route 1: use Fistty. Your own profile link works the same way as anyone else’s, as long as your account is public. Copy your profile URL from the three dots on your profile and paste it on Fistty.
Route 2: use Instagram’s data download. If your account is private, or you want the original uncropped file, go to Settings, then Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information. Choose your Instagram account and request the file. Instagram sends a link within a day or two. The export includes your current and past profile pictures at the quality you uploaded them. This is slower, but it is the only way to get the original back if you no longer have it on your phone.
A simpler habit for the future: keep the original photo in your gallery before you set it as your profile picture.
Public profiles only, and a word about respect
Fistty can fetch the profile picture of any public account. For a private account, Instagram still shows the profile picture to everyone, but at the small size only; the full-size version is held back from logged-out visitors, and no online tool can fetch it. Fistty does not take your login, so following the account does not change this. If the profile is private, you will see a message saying the account is private or no media was found.
A profile picture is a photo of a real person, or a logo a business owns. Downloading it to recognise a contact, to keep a friend’s photo, or to check whether an account is impersonating someone is normal personal use. Using someone’s profile picture as your own, putting it on a product, or using it to create a fake account is not. It can breach Instagram’s rules on impersonation, and in many countries it is a legal issue as well. Keep downloads for personal use, and if you want to use a photo publicly, ask the person first. Fistty’s DMCA page explains how image owners can request removal.
Downloading on iPhone vs Android
iPhone
Safari saves the image to the Files app. After you tap Download, tap the blue arrow at the top of Safari, tap the file, tap the share icon at the bottom left, and tap Save Image. If Fistty shows the image as a preview in the browser, you can also tap and hold the image and tap Add to Photos, which skips the Files step. For more on how Safari handles downloads, see our guide on downloading with Safari on iPhone.
Android
Chrome, Opera, and Samsung Internet save the image to the Downloads folder, and the Gallery app shows it within a few seconds. If it does not appear, open the Files app, tap Downloads, and tap the image once; that makes the gallery refresh. On Infinix, Tecno, and itel phones, the image appears in the Photos or Gallery app under Downloads.
Troubleshooting profile picture downloads
- “Account is private”. The full-size profile picture is only served to approved, logged-in followers. Fistty cannot fetch it. Ask the person to send you the photo.
- Fistty shows posts instead of the profile picture. Scroll up on the results page. For a profile link, the profile picture is shown at the top and the public posts below it.
- The image looks small or blurry. The account uploaded a low-quality image. Fistty gives you the largest version Instagram has, and no site can give you more.
- “Profile not found”. Check the spelling of the username. Links copied from a browser may have extra text after the username; remove anything after the first slash following the name.
- The profile picture changed. Instagram serves the current picture only. Older profile pictures are not available from a public profile.
If Fistty returns an error for a public account, wait a minute and try again. Instagram sometimes limits how often a profile can be read, and a short pause usually fixes it.
