You cannot download a private Instagram video with any online tool, and that includes Fistty. A private account only shows its posts to approved followers who are logged in. A link-based downloader is not logged in, so Instagram shows it nothing. The honest options are to ask the owner to send the video, have the owner download their own copy, or download the public version if one exists.
Any site that says it can “unlock” private Instagram videos is either lying or trying to take your password. This guide explains what is really possible in 2026 and how to do it safely.
Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.
How to download an Instagram video that is public (or your own)
If the account is public, or the video is on your own account, the download takes less than a minute. The same steps work for Reels, feed videos and video posts in a carousel.
- Open the video in the Instagram app. Tap the video so it fills the screen. For a Reel, make sure the account name is showing at the bottom left.
- Copy the link. Tap the Share arrow (the paper-plane icon) under the video, or tap the three dots at the top right of the post. In the menu, tap Copy link. Instagram shows a short “Link copied” message.
- Open Fistty’s Instagram downloader. Go to https://fistty.com/download-instagram-videos-and-photos/ in Chrome, Safari or any browser. There is no app to install and no login.
- Paste the link. Tap inside the box, hold for a second and choose Paste. Then tap Download.
- Choose the quality. Fistty shows the available sizes. Pick the HD option for the best picture, or a smaller size if you want to save data.
- Find the file. On Android the video goes to the Downloads folder and appears in Gallery. On iPhone it saves to the Files app under Downloads; open it, tap Share and choose Save Video to move it to Photos.
If you paste a link from a private account, Fistty will return an error or a message saying the content is not available. That is not a bug. It is Instagram doing exactly what the account owner asked it to do.
Why no tool can download private Instagram videos
It helps to understand what happens when you paste a link. A downloader like Fistty visits the Instagram link the same way a stranger would in a browser with no account. Instagram checks who is asking. For a public account, it serves the video file and Fistty passes it to you. For a private account, Instagram serves a login wall and nothing else. There is no video to fetch.
Some sites claim to get around this. Here is what they are really doing:
- Asking for your Instagram username and password. This is the most common trick. Once you log in on their page, they have your account. Fistty never asks for a password, and no honest downloader does.
- Asking you to “verify” by installing an app or extension. The app usually does nothing except show ads or collect data.
- Showing a fake progress bar that ends in “complete a survey to continue”. The survey is the product. The video never appears.
Even a tool that asks you to log in with your own account cannot download a video from a private account you do not follow. Instagram checks the follower list, not just whether someone is logged in. The same applies to private Facebook videos and private TikTok videos; see our guide to private TikTok videos for the TikTok side.
The honest ways to get a private Instagram video
If the video matters to you, one of these routes will work. None of them need a third-party tool.
1. Ask the owner to send it
This is the fastest route. The person who posted the video has the original file on their phone. Ask them to send it on WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram DM. Telegram sends the file at full quality. WhatsApp compresses videos, so ask them to send it as a Document instead of a video if you want the original quality.
2. The owner downloads their own copy
If you are the account owner, you have several ways to get your own video:
- Save from the app. Open your Reel, tap the three dots and look for Download or Save to device. This works for your own Reels and saves straight to Gallery or Photos.
- Download your information. In Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Your activity → Download your information. Instagram emails you a file with every photo and video you have posted. This can take a day or two.
- Switch to public for a minute. Make the account public, copy the link, download it on Fistty, then switch back to private. This is quick, but remember that anyone can see your profile during that minute.
3. Screen record with permission
If you follow the account and the owner says it is fine, you can screen record the video while it plays. On Android, swipe down and tap Screen record in Quick Settings. On iPhone, add Screen Recording to Control Centre, then swipe down and tap the record button. The result is lower quality than a real download and includes the Instagram interface, but it works for a personal keepsake.
Do not screen record a private video and post it somewhere else. The owner chose a private account for a reason, and reposting breaks both Instagram’s rules and basic trust.
Downloading from a public account that posted the same video
Many videos on private accounts started somewhere else. A friend may have reposted a Reel from a public creator, or a brand may have shared a clip from its public page. If you can find the original public post, you can download that instead.
Tap the audio name at the bottom of a Reel to see other videos using the same sound. Search the caption text on Instagram. Check whether the video has a watermark from TikTok or another app, which tells you where the public version lives. Once you find a public link, paste it into Fistty’s Instagram downloader and download as normal. Our guide to downloading Instagram Reels covers that path in detail.
What about Stories and Close Friends?
Stories from a private account follow the same rule: no public link, no download. Close Friends stories are private even on a public account, so the green ring means no tool can fetch them. Stories from a public account can be downloaded while they are live. See how to download Instagram Stories for the steps.
A quick safety checklist
Before you use any site that promises private Instagram downloads, run through these points:
- Does it ask for a username or password? Close the tab.
- Does it ask you to install anything? Close the tab.
- Does it show a progress bar that stops at a survey or “human verification” step? Close the tab.
- Does it ask for permission to send notifications? Tap Block.
A real downloader needs only one thing: a public link. If a site needs more than that, it is not downloading the video. It is collecting something from you. If you find your own content on a site that has reposted it without permission, Fistty’s DMCA page explains how to report it.

Frequently asked questions
Can you download a video from a private Instagram account?
No. A private account only shows its posts to approved followers who are logged in. Online tools are not logged in, so Instagram gives them nothing to download. Ask the owner to send the video instead.
Is there any app that downloads private Instagram videos?
No app can do this without your login, and even with your login it can only see accounts you already follow. Apps that promise more are usually collecting passwords or showing ads.
Can I download a private Instagram video if I follow the account?
Not with a link-based tool, because the tool is not logged in as you. You can screen record the video with the owner's permission, or ask them to send you the file.
How do I download my own private Instagram videos?
Open your Reel, tap the three dots and choose Download. For everything at once, use Your activity → Download your information in the Instagram settings.
Does Instagram notify someone if I download their video?
No. Instagram does not send a notification for downloads or screen recordings of posts, Reels or Stories. Still, only save content you have permission to use.
Is Fistty safe to use for Instagram videos?
Yes. Fistty is a website that only needs a public link. It never asks for your username, password or any app install, and it works in any browser.
