How to Download WhatsApp Status Videos Without a Status Saver App

WhatsApp statuses are not public links, so no website can fetch them. Here are the three honest ways to save one, including the cleanest route through Fistty.

You can download a WhatsApp status video without a status saver app in three ways: open the hidden .Statuses folder on Android, screen record on iPhone, or, if the status is a TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram clip, find the original link and download a clean copy with Fistty. That last route gives you the best quality, with no WhatsApp compression and no screen recording blur.

One honest point first: a WhatsApp status is not a public web page. It has no link that a website can open. So no online downloader, including Fistty, can fetch a status directly. Here is what actually works.

Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.

How to download the original video behind a WhatsApp status with Fistty

Most status videos people want to keep did not start on WhatsApp. They are TikTok clips, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels or Instagram Reels that someone downloaded and reposted. If you can find that original, you get a clean, full-quality file in seconds.

  1. Find the original link. Look for clues on the status itself: a TikTok username and logo in the corner, an Instagram handle, a YouTube channel name. Reply to the status and ask the person “Where did you get this? Send me the link.” Most people copied it from an app minutes earlier and will send it. Or search the caption text or username in that app and open the video.
  2. Copy the link in the source app. On TikTok, tap the Share arrow and choose Copy link. On YouTube, tap Share, then Copy link. On Facebook or Instagram, tap the Share arrow or the three dots and choose Copy link.
  3. Open Fistty. Go to Fistty’s home page in any browser. It accepts links from TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram and Moj on one page, so you do not need to know which tool to pick.
  4. Paste the link and tap Download. Tap and hold inside the box, choose Paste, and tap the Download button. Fistty shows the video and the quality options.
  5. Choose the quality. Pick 720p for a good balance between quality and data. TikTok downloads from Fistty come without the watermark.
  6. Find the file. On Android the video lands in the Downloads folder and appears in Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves it to the Files app under Downloads; open it, tap Share, then Save Video to put it in Photos.

Now you have a copy that is sharper than the status you saw, because WhatsApp compresses every status video it shows you.

Why no website can download a WhatsApp status directly

When you open a status, WhatsApp downloads the video to your phone over an encrypted connection between your friend’s phone and yours. There is no public address for that video. Nobody outside the two of you can see it, and it disappears after 24 hours. That is good for privacy, but it means any site that promises to “download WhatsApp status by link” is either asking you to upload the file yourself or is not telling the truth.

This is also why Fistty does not have a WhatsApp status page. We only build tools for things that work. The methods below use what is already on your phone.

Method 2: The hidden .Statuses folder on Android

Every status you view is quietly saved on your Android phone in a hidden folder. You just need to make hidden files visible and copy the video out before the 24 hours end.

  1. Open the status in WhatsApp and watch it to the end at least once. WhatsApp only stores statuses you have actually viewed.
  2. Open your Files app (Files by Google, or the file manager that came with your Infinix, Tecno, Samsung or itel phone).
  3. Turn on hidden files. In Files by Google, tap the three dots at the top right and choose Show hidden files. In other file managers the option is usually under Settings.
  4. Go to Internal storage, then Android, then media, then com.whatsapp, then WhatsApp, then Media, then .Statuses. On older phones the path is simply Internal storage, WhatsApp, Media, .Statuses.
  5. Long-press the video you want, tap Copy or Move, and place it in your Downloads or DCIM folder. Files inside .Statuses are deleted automatically when the status expires, so copying it out is what saves it.

Some phones block access to the Android folder in third-party file managers. If you cannot open it, try the phone’s own file manager, or connect the phone to a computer with a cable and browse to the same path.

If you use WhatsApp Business

WhatsApp Business keeps its own folder. Follow the same path but open com.whatsapp.w4b instead of com.whatsapp, then WhatsApp Business, Media, .Statuses. If you have both apps installed, each one has its own .Statuses folder, so check the one that matches the account where you viewed the status.

Method 3: Screen recording on iPhone

iPhones do not expose a .Statuses folder, so the built-in screen recorder is the no-app route.

  1. Add the recorder if you have not already: open Settings, then Control Centre, and tap the plus next to Screen Recording.
  2. Open WhatsApp and go to the Updates tab, but do not open the status yet.
  3. Swipe down from the top right to open Control Centre and tap the record button. After the three-second countdown, go back to WhatsApp and tap the status.
  4. When the status ends, tap the red bar at the top of the screen and choose Stop. The recording is saved to Photos.
  5. Open the video in Photos, tap Edit, and trim the start and end to remove the Control Centre and status bar.

Screen recording works, but the quality is lower than the original, and the recording captures the status bar, reply box and any notification that pops up. If the clip came from TikTok or YouTube, the Fistty route above gives a far cleaner file.

Which method should you use?

Method Works on Quality Best for
Original link on Fistty Android, iPhone, PC Full original quality, no watermark Clips that came from TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram
.Statuses folder Android only Same as the status you saw Personal videos a friend recorded themselves
Screen recording iPhone (and Android) Lower, includes screen elements Last resort when the other two are not possible

Respecting the person who posted the status

A status is meant for the people on the poster’s contact list, for one day. If a friend shares a personal video of their child or their home, think before saving it, and never repost it anywhere without asking. For public clips from TikTok or YouTube, personal use is fine, but reposting a creator’s work as your own can break platform rules and copyright. Fistty’s DMCA page explains how rights holders can reach us.

If you want to post your own status from a TikTok, our guide on downloading TikTok videos for WhatsApp status walks through it, and this guide on the right size and length for status videos helps the clip fit without being cut. In 2026 this remains the cleanest way to get status-ready videos without filling your phone with saver apps that show ads and ask for permissions you do not need to give.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a WhatsApp status video with a link?

No. WhatsApp statuses do not have public links, so no website can fetch them. Use the .Statuses folder on Android, screen record on iPhone, or download the original clip from TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram with Fistty.

Where is the .Statuses folder on Android?

Open your Files app, turn on Show hidden files, then go to Internal storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > .Statuses. On older phones it is at Internal storage > WhatsApp > Media > .Statuses.

How do I save a WhatsApp status on iPhone without an app?

Use the built-in Screen Recording tool from Control Centre while the status plays, then trim the recording in Photos. For better quality, find the original clip and download it with Fistty.

Does the person know if I save their status?

WhatsApp only shows that you viewed the status. It does not tell the poster that you saved, copied or screen recorded it.

Why did the video disappear from the .Statuses folder?

WhatsApp deletes files from .Statuses when the status expires after 24 hours. Copy the video to another folder while the status is still live.

Are WhatsApp status saver apps safe?

Some are fine, but many show heavy ads and ask for broad storage permissions. The methods in this guide need no extra app at all.
