How to Download YouTube Music Songs as MP3

YouTube Music tracks are YouTube videos with a music.youtube.com link. This guide shows how to copy that link, convert it to MP3 with Fistty for personal offline listening, and when YouTube Premium or Spotify is the better route.

To convert YouTube Music to MP3, copy the song link from the YouTube Music app (Share → Copy link), paste it into Fistty’s YouTube downloader and choose MP3. Every YouTube Music track is a YouTube video with a music.youtube.com address, so the same free tool works for both. It takes about a minute per song, needs no app or login, and is meant for your own offline listening.

Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.

How to download a YouTube Music song as MP3 on Fistty

YouTube Music and regular YouTube share the same library. The song you see in YouTube Music is the same file YouTube stores, just shown in a music-style interface. That is why Fistty’s YouTube page can handle it. Here is the step-by-step process on a phone.

  1. Find the song in YouTube Music. Open the YouTube Music app and play the track, or open it from a playlist or album. Tap the song so the full player opens.
  2. Copy the link. Tap the three dots at the top right of the player (or next to the song in a list), tap Share, then Copy link. The link looks like https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID. On the website, copy the URL from the address bar instead.
  3. Open Fistty’s YouTube downloader. Go to https://fistty.com/youtube-video-downloader/ in Chrome, Safari or any browser. There is no separate MP3 page; the YouTube page does both video and audio.
  4. Paste the link and tap Download. Long-press the box, tap Paste, then Download. Fistty reads the video ID from the music.youtube.com link and fetches the track.
  5. Choose MP3. In the list of formats, pick MP3 (audio) instead of a video resolution. If you see more than one audio option, the higher bitrate (around 128 kbps or above) sounds better and is still a small file.
  6. Find the file on your phone. On Android the MP3 lands in the Downloads folder and shows up in your music player (Samsung Music, Files, VLC) after a moment. On iPhone it saves to the Files app under Downloads; you can play it there or add it to a music app that reads from Files.

Why a music.youtube.com link works on a YouTube downloader

People often think YouTube Music is a separate service with its own files, like Spotify. It is not. YouTube Music is a different front door to the same YouTube catalogue. When a label uploads a song, YouTube creates the “Topic” audio track and the official video, and both appear in YouTube Music and regular YouTube.

The only difference is the domain. A YouTube Music link starts with music.youtube.com, while a normal link starts with youtube.com or youtu.be. The important part, v=VIDEO_ID, is identical. Fistty reads that ID and ignores the rest.

If a tool ever rejects the music.youtube.com link, you can convert it by hand in two seconds. Replace music.youtube.com with www.youtube.com and keep everything after it. For example, https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123 becomes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123. Remove any &list= or &si= parts at the end if you want a clean link. Fistty accepts both forms, so you will rarely need this, but it is useful to know.

Audio quality: what you actually get

YouTube streams audio at up to about 128 kbps AAC for free accounts and up to around 256 kbps for Premium subscribers inside the official app. A downloader works from the public stream, so the MP3 you get is based on the standard quality, converted to MP3. In practice it sounds good on phone speakers, earbuds and car stereos. It is not lossless, and nothing downloaded from YouTube is.

Option Typical bitrate Size of a 4-minute song Best for
MP3 from Fistty About 128 kbps 3 to 5 MB Phone, earbuds, car, WhatsApp sharing
YouTube Premium offline Up to about 256 kbps Inside the app only Highest YouTube quality, but locked in the app
Spotify / Apple Music offline Up to 320 kbps or lossless Inside the app only Best sound, needs a subscription

If you only want the sound and not the video, always choose MP3 rather than a 360p video. A 4-minute MP3 is about 4 MB; the same song as 360p video is 15 to 25 MB. On a mobile data plan that difference adds up fast across an album.

The official ways to listen offline

We believe in being straight with you. Downloading a song you do not own for personal listening is a grey area under YouTube’s terms, which ask you to use their own download feature. If you want a fully official route, these are the main options in 2026.

  • YouTube Premium (includes YouTube Music Premium). Lets you download songs, albums and playlists inside the YouTube Music app for offline play, with no ads. The files stay inside the app and stop working if you cancel. There is a cheaper Music-only plan in many countries.
  • Spotify Premium. Offline downloads inside the Spotify app, large catalogue, good playlists. Same limit: the songs live in the app, not as MP3 files.
  • Audiomack. Very popular in Nigeria and Ghana. Many Afrobeats, gospel and hip-hop artists upload directly, and a lot of tracks are free to download offline inside the app.
  • Boomplay. Another Africa-focused service with offline downloads, often bundled with MTN and other network promotions.
  • Buy the track. Services like Bandcamp, iTunes and Amazon sell MP3 or AAC files you own outright and can copy anywhere.

The honest trade-off: official apps give you convenience and support the artist, but the music is tied to the app and the subscription. An MP3 file is yours to keep and move, which is why many people still want one for a car stereo, a feature phone, a WhatsApp status or a long trip with no network. Fistty gives you that option for your own use. Please do not re-upload or sell the file, and do not share it as if it were your own; that is where downloads cross into copyright problems.

Tips for downloading YouTube Music on a phone

Use the “Topic” version for clean audio

In YouTube Music, most songs exist twice: the official music video and an audio-only version from a channel ending in – Topic. The Topic version has no intro skits, no dialogue and no fade-outs, so it makes a cleaner MP3. In the app, tap the song, then look for the Switch to song or Song toggle at the top of the player before you copy the link.

Download albums one track at a time

Fistty takes one link at a time. For a full album, open the album, copy each song’s link and paste them into Fistty in turn. Keep Fistty open in one tab and YouTube Music in another to speed this up. For very long playlists, our YouTube playlist guide covers desktop tools that can do a whole list.

Fix missing song titles

Fistty names the MP3 after the video title, which is usually “Artist – Song”. If your music player shows “Unknown artist”, open the file’s details and edit the tags, or use a free tag editor app. The sound is fine; only the label is missing.

Watch for mixed-up links

If you copy a link while a playlist is playing, it may include &list=. Fistty still picks the right song, but if you get the wrong track, open the song directly and copy again. Our guide to YouTube to MP3 conversions has more on getting clean links and good audio.
