Instagram Reels Not Downloading? 8 Fixes

Eight quick fixes for Instagram Reels that will not download, from the missing in-app Download button and private accounts to wrong links, browser settings and storage. Plus the free Fistty method.

If your Instagram Reels are not downloading, the cause is almost always one of eight things: the Reel is from a private account, the creator switched downloads off, you copied the wrong link, the Reel was deleted, your browser blocked the file, your storage is full, your connection dropped, or the app itself has a bug. The fastest fix for most of them is to copy the Reel link and download it through Fistty’s Instagram downloader, which needs no app and no login.

Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.

How to download an Instagram Reel when the app will not

Before you work through the fixes, try this method. It is the one that keeps working in 2026 when the in-app button does not. It skips Instagram’s Download button completely and works on iPhone, Android and computers.

  1. Copy the link. Open the Reel in Instagram and tap the Share icon (the paper plane arrow) on the right side under the comment bubble. In the tray that slides up, tap Copy link. You will see “Link copied” at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Open Fistty. Go to https://fistty.com/download-instagram-videos-and-photos/ in Safari, Chrome, Opera or any other browser.
  3. Paste and tap Download. Tap inside the link box, hold, tap Paste, then tap Download. Fistty loads a preview of the Reel.
  4. Choose the quality. Pick 1080p for the sharpest copy or 720p to save data. Tap the download button for that option.
  5. Find the file. On Android it lands in the Downloads folder and appears in Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves it in the Files app under Downloads; tap it, tap Share, then Save Video to move it to Photos.

If that worked, you are done. If it did not, or if you want to understand what went wrong inside the Instagram app, the fixes below cover every common case.

The 8 fixes, in the order to try them

1. Check whether the account is private

Open the creator’s profile. If you see a padlock next to the name, or the text “This account is private”, the Reel is only served to approved followers inside the app. Instagram’s Download button will not appear, and no online tool, including Fistty, can fetch the video. This is not a bug and there is no workaround. You can ask the creator to send you the file directly.

2. The creator has turned downloads off

Instagram added a Download option to the Share tray for public Reels in 2023, but creators can disable it in their settings. When they do, the option simply disappears from the tray. Fistty does not rely on that in-app button, so a public Reel with downloads switched off still works when you paste its link.

3. The Reel uses licensed music

Some Reels that use commercial music tracks lose the in-app Download option in certain countries, because Instagram does not have rights to let the audio leave the platform there. Again, this only affects the button inside the app. The public link still points to the video, so Fistty can download it as normal.

4. You copied the wrong link

A correct Reel link looks like instagram.com/reel/ followed by a short code. If you copied a profile link (instagram.com/username) or a link to a Story, the downloader cannot find a video to fetch and will show a “not found” or “invalid link” message. Go back to the Reel itself, open the Share tray and tap Copy link again. If you pasted into a chat first and then copied from there, some messaging apps add tracking text to the end; copy directly from Instagram instead.

5. The Reel was deleted or archived

Creators delete Reels, archive them or change them to “Close friends” after posting. A link you saved last week may now point to nothing. Open the link in your browser first. If Instagram shows “Sorry, this page isn’t available”, the video is gone and cannot be downloaded by anyone.

6. Your browser is blocking the download

This is the most common reason the Fistty method fails on a phone, and it has nothing to do with Instagram.

  • Safari on iPhone: if nothing happens when you tap the download button, look for a small blue arrow icon at the top of the screen. Tap it to see the download. If you have Content Blockers on, go to Settings, then Safari, and turn them off for fistty.com/. Downloads over 20 MB may also pause if Low Data Mode is on.
  • Chrome on Android: Chrome may ask for permission to save files the first time. Tap Allow. If you tapped Deny before, open Android Settings, then Apps, then Chrome, then Permissions, and allow Files and media (or Storage).
  • Instagram’s in-app browser: if you opened Fistty from a link inside Instagram, the in-app browser often cannot save files. Tap the three dots and choose Open in browser, then try again.
  • Pop-up blockers and data-saver browsers: Opera Mini in Extreme mode and some ad blockers stop file downloads. Switch to the standard mode or a different browser for one download.

7. Your phone is out of storage

A download that starts and then fails at 99%, or a video that shows up in Downloads but will not play, is often a storage problem. Check Settings, then Storage. If you have less than 500 MB free, clear the Instagram cache (which can grow to several gigabytes on its own) or delete old WhatsApp videos, then try again. Pick 720p instead of 1080p if space is tight. Our guide Download Stuck at 0% or 99%? Fixes for Slow and Frozen Downloads goes deeper on this.

8. Connection problems and app bugs

If the preview loads in Fistty but the file never finishes, your connection dropped during the transfer. Move to Wi-Fi or wait for a stronger signal and try again. If the Instagram app itself is misbehaving, with the Download option greyed out or the Share tray not opening, update the app from the App Store or Play Store, or force-close it and reopen. On Android you can also clear the Instagram cache under Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Storage, without losing your account.

Instagram’s Download button vs Fistty

Many people only discover Fistty after the in-app button fails them. Here is how the two compare so you know which to reach for.

Instagram Download button Fistty
Works on private accounts No No
Works when creator disables downloads No Yes (public Reels)
Watermark Adds Instagram logo and username None; original file
Quality choice None Pick from available resolutions
Needs the app Yes No, any browser
Needs login Yes No

The watermark difference matters more than people expect. If you want a clean copy for editing or for a WhatsApp status, read How to Download Instagram Reels Without Watermark.

Device-specific notes

On iPhone, the most confusing moment is after the download finishes and the video is nowhere in Photos. It is in the Files app under Downloads, and you move it with Share, then Save Video. The complete walkthrough is in How to Download Instagram Reels on iPhone.

On Android, the file lands in Downloads and Gallery normally picks it up within a few seconds. If Gallery does not show it, open the Files or My Files app and look in Downloads. Samsung, Infinix and Tecno phones sometimes hide the Downloads folder from Gallery until you open it once. See How to Download Instagram Reels on Android for each brand.

One more honest note. Saving a public Reel for personal offline viewing is generally fine. Reposting someone’s Reel as your own may break Instagram’s rules and copyright, so credit the creator or ask first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Download option missing on Instagram Reels?

The option only appears on public Reels where the creator has allowed downloads, and it can be hidden for Reels with licensed music in some countries. Paste the Reel link into Fistty instead; it does not depend on that button.

Why can't I download a Reel from a private account?

Private Reels are only shown to approved followers inside the Instagram app. Neither Instagram's own button nor any online downloader can save them.

Why does my downloaded Reel have a watermark?

Instagram's built-in Download button stamps its logo and the creator's username on the file. Downloading the same Reel through Fistty gives you the original clean MP4.

Why does the Reel download start but never finish?

Usually your connection dropped or your phone is low on storage. Switch to Wi-Fi, free up space, and try again at 720p.

Where did my downloaded Reel go?

On Android it is in the Downloads folder and Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves it in the Files app under Downloads; use Share, then Save Video to move it to Photos.

Do I need to log in to Instagram to use Fistty?

No. Fistty only needs the public Reel link. It never asks for your Instagram username or password.
