A download stuck at 99% usually means the browser received the whole file but is waiting to finish writing it, which stalls when storage is low, the connection dropped at the last moment, or a virus scanner is checking the file. A download stuck at 0% means the transfer never started, which points to a blocked connection, a browser pop-up block, or a server timeout. Most cases are fixed by freeing space, switching network, and restarting the download from Fistty.

How to restart a frozen download the clean way
Before any deeper fix, do a clean retry. A fresh download link is often all it takes, because the temporary link the platform gave the downloader may have expired while your download sat frozen.
- Cancel the stuck download. On Android, pull down the notification shade and tap Cancel on the download. On iPhone, tap the download arrow in Safari and swipe the item away. Delete any leftover file ending in .crdownload, .part or .download from your Downloads folder.
- Copy the video link again. On TikTok tap Share > Copy link. On YouTube tap Share > Copy link under the player. On Facebook use the three dots and Copy link. On Instagram use the three dots above the Reel and Copy link.
- Open the Fistty page for that platform. Use Fistty’s TikTok downloader, the YouTube downloader, the Facebook downloader, or the Instagram downloader.
- Paste, tap Download, and pick a smaller quality. If 1080p froze, choose 720p or 480p. A smaller file finishes before a weak connection drops.
- Confirm the browser prompt and watch the progress bar. If it moves steadily, you are fine.
- Find the finished file. On Android it is in Downloads and appears in Gallery. On iPhone it is in Files > Downloads, or in Photos if you chose to save it there.
Stuck at 0%: the transfer never began
When the bar does not move at all, the browser asked for the file and nothing came back. Check these in order.
1. The browser blocked the download
Chrome on Android shows a small “Download blocked” bar at the bottom; tap Download anyway. Safari on iPhone may silently refuse if pop-ups are blocked for the site. Opera Mini in Extreme data-saving mode strips large files entirely; switch to High or Off. Our guide to why video downloaders stop working has the exact settings for each browser.
2. The temporary link expired
Platforms give downloaders a video address that only works for a few minutes. If you tapped Download, got distracted, and came back ten minutes later, the address is dead and the browser waits forever. Cancel and start again from the paste step.
3. Your data connection has no throughput
A phone can show full 4G bars and still have almost no bandwidth at a busy time of day, especially on shared masts in the evening. Open any web page; if it crawls, the download will crawl too. Switch to Wi-Fi, move to a different spot, or try again in an hour. Nigerian and Ghanaian users on MTN or Airtel often find night hours much faster.
4. A VPN or private DNS is interfering
Some free VPN apps and “private DNS” settings route traffic through slow servers that time out on large files. Turn the VPN off for the download, or set Private DNS to Automatic in Settings > Connections > More connection settings on Android.
5. The browser already has too many downloads queued
Chrome and Samsung Internet limit how many files download at once. Older stuck items can block new ones. Clear the download list and try again.
Stuck at 99%: the file arrived but did not finish
This one feels worse because you waited through the whole download. The good news is that the data is on your phone. The browser just cannot complete the last step.
1. Low storage
Browsers download to a temporary file and then copy it to its final name. That copy needs free space equal to the file size. If you have 40 MB free and the video is 35 MB, the download reaches 99% and dies. Free at least two or three times the file size. On Android go to Settings > Storage; on iPhone go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Empty the Gallery or Photos recycle bin, which can hold gigabytes of “deleted” videos for 30 days.
2. The connection dropped at the final packet
A download is only complete when the server confirms the end of the file. If your connection blinked at that exact moment, the browser waits for a confirmation that never comes. Cancel and retry on a steadier network. Picking a smaller quality lowers the chance of this happening again.
3. A security scanner is checking the file
Some Android security apps and Samsung’s Device Care scan downloads before releasing them. A large file can sit at 99% for a minute while this happens. Wait two minutes before you cancel. If it happens every time, turn off download scanning in the security app’s settings.
4. The download went to a removed SD card
If your browser was set to save to an SD card that has since been taken out or has failed, the download runs until the write step and then fails. Change the save location back to internal storage in your browser settings.
5. The file is actually finished
Sometimes the progress display is wrong. Open your Downloads folder in Files or My Files. If there is an .mp4 file with a sensible size and it plays, the download finished and the notification simply never updated. Delete the stuck notification and move on.
Why downloads are slow in the first place
Speed depends on four things, and only two are in your control.
| Factor | Effect | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Your network speed | Biggest factor. A 2 Mbps connection takes about 100 seconds for a 25 MB file. | Use Wi-Fi, download at night, move for better signal. |
| File size (quality) | 1080p is roughly double the size of 720p, and four times 480p. | Pick 720p for phone viewing, 480p for WhatsApp. |
| Platform server speed | The video comes from TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram servers, not from Fistty. | Nothing; this varies by time of day. |
| Browser overhead | Data-saver proxies and extensions add delay. | Turn off Extreme data saving in Opera Mini; try Chrome. |
For a sense of scale, a one-minute TikTok at 720p is 15 to 25 MB, a ten-minute YouTube video at 720p is around 100 to 150 MB, and the same YouTube video at 1080p can pass 300 MB. Our guide to 720p vs 1080p vs 4K on mobile data helps you choose.
Fixes by device
- iPhone (Safari): downloads pause when Safari goes to the background on some iOS versions. Keep Safari open until the arrow icon stops animating. Check Settings > Safari > Downloads to confirm files are going to “On My iPhone” rather than iCloud Drive, which depends on your iCloud connection. See our Safari download guide.
- Android (Chrome): if Data Saver or “Lite mode” is on in Chrome settings, turn it off for downloads. Also disable battery optimisation for Chrome if downloads stall when the screen locks.
- Samsung: turn off Download Booster under Connections > More connection settings if your downloads freeze on weak networks. Check that Secure Folder is not the browser you are using unless you mean to save there.
- Infinix, Tecno, itel: Phone Master’s auto-clean can delete temporary download files mid-transfer. Turn off auto-clean while downloading.
- Opera Mini: Extreme mode is the usual culprit for a bar that never moves. Switch to High or Off. Our Opera Mini download guide explains each mode.
When the file finished but seems wrong
If the download reached 100% but the file is only a few kilobytes, you downloaded an error page, not a video. This happens when the temporary link expired right as the download started. Delete the small file and run the clean retry above. If the file has a normal size but will not open, the problem is the format or codec, not the download; see our guide to downloaded videos that will not play.
In 2026 most phones and networks handle a 720p MP4 without trouble. When a download freezes, the honest answer is almost always network or storage, and both are fixable in a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my download stuck at 99 percent?
The file has arrived but the browser cannot finish writing it. Low storage is the top cause, followed by a connection drop at the last moment or a security app scanning the file. Free up space and retry.
Why does my video download stay at 0 percent?
The transfer never started. The browser may have blocked it, the temporary download link may have expired, or your connection has no bandwidth right now. Cancel, copy the link again, and retry.
How much free storage do I need to download a video?
At least two to three times the file size, because the browser writes a temporary copy before saving the final file. For a 100 MB video, keep 300 MB free.
Does a lower quality download faster?
Yes. 720p is roughly half the size of 1080p, and 480p is about half of 720p. On a slow connection, smaller files also finish before the connection drops.
Can I resume a frozen download?
Usually not from a downloader, because the temporary video link expires in minutes. Cancel the stuck download, delete the partial file, and start again with a fresh link.
Why is the downloaded file only a few KB?
You downloaded an error page instead of the video, usually because the temporary link expired. Delete the small file and download again from a fresh paste.
