A video downloader “invalid link” or “video not found” error means the downloader reached the address you pasted but did not find a public video there. The usual causes are a profile, playlist or hashtag link instead of a video link, a private or deleted video, an expired story, a region block, or a shortened link that did not unfold. Copy a fresh link from the video’s Share menu and paste it into Fistty; that fixes most cases.
Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.
How to copy a link that a video downloader can read
Downloaders work from the link alone. If the link does not point to one video, the downloader has nothing to fetch. Follow these steps and the error usually disappears.
- Open the video itself, not the feed. Tap the video so it fills the screen. On TikTok and Instagram that means you are on a single video, not scrolling. On YouTube it means the player page is open. On Facebook it means the video is open in its own view.
- Copy from the Share menu. On TikTok, tap the Share arrow and choose Copy link. On YouTube, tap Share under the player and choose Copy link. On Facebook, tap the three dots at the top right of the post and choose Copy link. On Instagram, tap the three dots above the Reel and choose Copy link.
- Open the right Fistty page. Go to Fistty’s TikTok downloader, the YouTube downloader, the Facebook downloader or the Instagram downloader. The home page also accepts links from any of them.
- Paste the whole link. Long-press the box and tap Paste. Check that nothing was cut off at the end; some keyboards trim long links.
- Tap Download and wait for the preview. If a thumbnail appears, the link is valid. Choose MP4 at the quality you want.
- Find the file. On Android it is in Downloads and shows in Gallery. On iPhone it is in Files > Downloads, or in Photos if you saved it there.
What a valid video link looks like on each platform
Compare your link to this table. If yours does not match the “works” pattern, that is the problem.
| Platform | Works | Does not work |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | tiktok.com/@name/video/7301234567890 or a short vm.tiktok.com link | tiktok.com/@name (profile), tiktok.com/tag/… (hashtag), a LIVE link |
| YouTube | youtube.com/watch?v=abc123, youtu.be/abc123, youtube.com/shorts/abc123 | youtube.com/playlist?list=…, youtube.com/@channel, a live stream still in progress |
| facebook.com/watch?v=…, facebook.com/reel/…, facebook.com/name/videos/…, fb.watch/… | facebook.com/name (page), a group link, a friends-only post | |
| instagram.com/reel/ABC123, instagram.com/p/ABC123 | instagram.com/name (profile), an expired story, a private account’s post |
Short links such as vm.tiktok.com or fb.watch are fine. Fistty follows them to the full address. The error appears when the short link points to something that is not a video, or when the link expired.
The seven causes of an invalid link error, and the fix for each
1. You copied a profile, playlist, channel or hashtag link
This is the number one cause. If you tapped Share on a profile page or copied the address bar while scrolling, you got a link to a list of videos, not one video. The downloader cannot guess which one you want. Go back, open the single video, and copy again.
2. The video is private or friends-only
Private TikTok accounts, friends-only Facebook posts, private Instagram accounts and private or unlisted-with-restrictions YouTube videos are invisible to anyone the creator did not approve. The downloader is not logged in as you, so it sees “not found”. No online tool can fix this, and Fistty never asks for your password. Ask the creator to send the file.
3. The video was deleted or taken down
Open the link in your browser. If the platform itself shows “This video is unavailable” or “Sorry, this page isn’t available”, the video is gone. Creators delete posts, and platforms remove videos for copyright or policy reasons. Nothing can download a video that no longer exists.
4. The story expired
Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat stories disappear after 24 hours. A story link copied yesterday is dead today. If you want to keep a story, download it the same day. Our guide to downloading Instagram stories explains the timing.
5. The video is region-blocked
Some YouTube music videos and some Facebook posts are limited to certain countries. If your browser shows “not available in your country”, the downloader hits the same wall. There is no setting on the downloader that changes this.
6. The link was cut, changed or wrapped
Three things break links in transit:
- Trimmed by the keyboard. Some keyboards cut long links when you paste. Check the end of the link in the Fistty box.
- Wrapped by WhatsApp or Telegram. A link forwarded through chat sometimes has extra text stuck to it, such as a full stop or a bracket. Delete everything before “https” and after the last letter or number of the link.
- Tracking parameters. Links copied from the TikTok app carry a long tail of ?_r=1&_t=…. That is normal and Fistty handles it. Only remove it if the link still fails.
7. The downloader has not yet adjusted to a platform change
Every few weeks TikTok, Instagram or YouTube changes how video pages work. For a short time, downloaders can show “not found” for links that are perfectly valid. If every single link fails and the video is clearly public, wait an hour and try again. Fistty usually updates the same day.
How to test whether the problem is the link or the video
Use this quick test to split the two cases.
- Open a private browser window (Incognito in Chrome, Private in Safari). You are logged out of everything there.
- Paste the link into the address bar.
- If the video plays, it is public and the link is fine. The error is on the downloader side; try the home page, wait a few minutes, or clear your browser cache.
- If the platform asks you to log in or says the content is unavailable, the video is private, deleted, expired or region-blocked. No downloader can help.
This test takes thirty seconds and saves a lot of guessing. It also tells you honestly when to stop trying.
Platform-specific notes
- TikTok: a link to a photo carousel (slideshow) is a valid post but not a video. Fistty handles many of these, but some downloaders reject them. Links to a TikTok LIVE will not work until the creator posts a replay.
- YouTube: an age-restricted video needs a logged-in adult account on YouTube, so it behaves like a private video for downloaders. Premieres that have not started yet also return “not found”.
- Facebook: videos inside private groups and friends-only posts are the most common Facebook failures. Public page videos and public Reels download normally. See our Facebook video download guide.
- Instagram: a Reel from a private account fails even if you follow the account, because the downloader is not you. Reels from public accounts work. See Instagram Reels not downloading fixes.
If the link checks out and the video is public, but the download still stalls or the file will not play, you have a different problem. Our universal troubleshooting guide covers browser blocks, storage and network issues. In 2026 the platforms are stricter than ever about private content, so an honest “not found” is sometimes the correct answer.

Frequently asked questions
What does invalid link mean on a video downloader?
It means the address you pasted does not point to a single public video. The link is usually a profile, playlist or hashtag page, or the video is private, deleted, expired or region-blocked.
Why does the downloader say video not found when the video exists?
The video may be private or friends-only, so only logged-in approved viewers can see it. The downloader is not logged in, so it sees nothing. Test by opening the link in a private browser window.
How do I get the correct link for a TikTok video?
Open the video so it fills the screen, tap the Share arrow, and tap Copy link. A profile link (tiktok.com/@name) will not work; you need the link with /video/ in it or a short vm.tiktok.com link.
Can I download a YouTube playlist link?
Not as one link. A playlist link points to a list, not a video. Open each video and copy its own link, which contains watch?v= or youtu.be.
Why does an Instagram story link say not found?
Stories expire after 24 hours. If the story is older than that, it has been removed from Instagram and cannot be downloaded by any tool.
Do short links like vm.tiktok.com work with downloaders?
Yes. Fistty follows short links to the full video address. The error only appears if the short link points to a profile or to a video that is private or gone.
