When a downloaded video won’t play, one of four things is true: the file is a WEBM your phone’s player does not support, the video uses a codec such as HEVC or AV1 that your device cannot decode, the download never finished, or the file is not a video at all. The quickest fix is to download again from Fistty and choose MP4, or install VLC, which plays almost every format.

How to download a video in a format that plays on any phone
Most playback problems disappear if you pick the right format at download time. Here is the clean method.
- Copy the video link. On TikTok tap Share > Copy link. On YouTube tap Share > Copy link under the player. On Facebook tap the three dots and Copy link. On Instagram tap the three dots above the Reel and Copy link.
- Open the Fistty page for that platform. Use Fistty’s TikTok downloader, the YouTube downloader, the Facebook downloader, or the Instagram downloader.
- Paste and tap Download. Wait for the preview.
- Choose MP4. If you see both MP4 and WEBM, pick MP4. If you see a quality list, 720p MP4 is the safest choice for playback on any phone. Avoid options labelled 4K, 2160p or AV1 unless you have a recent high-end phone.
- Confirm the browser prompt and let it finish. Do not open the file while the progress bar is still moving.
- Open it from the right place. On Android the file is in Downloads and shows in Gallery. On iPhone it is in Files > Downloads; tap Share > Save Video to move it to Photos.
First, check the file itself
Before you blame the player, confirm the file is a complete video. This takes one minute.
- Check the extension. In Files or My Files, look at the end of the file name. .mp4 and .mov play almost everywhere. .webm and .mkv do not play in the stock player on many phones. .crdownload, .part or .download means the download never finished.
- Check the size. A one-minute clip should be at least a few MB. A file of 1 to 50 KB is an error page saved with a video name. Delete it and download again. Our frozen download guide explains why this happens.
- Check that it is not still downloading. Pull down the notification shade. If the progress bar is still moving, wait.
- Try a second player. If Gallery refuses but VLC plays it, the file is fine and the stock player lacks a codec.
MP4 vs WEBM: why one plays and the other does not
A video file is a container that holds a video stream and an audio stream. The container (MP4, WEBM, MKV) and the codecs inside it (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1) are separate things, and your phone must support both.
| Container | Usual codecs inside | Plays in stock phone player? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP4 with H.264 (AVC) | H.264 video, AAC audio | Yes, on every phone made in the last decade | The safest choice. Pick this when in doubt. |
| MP4 with HEVC (H.265) | HEVC video, AAC audio | Most phones from 2017 onward; some budget Androids struggle | Smaller file for the same quality, but less compatible. |
| MP4 with AV1 | AV1 video, Opus or AAC audio | Only recent phones with hardware AV1 decoding | Common on YouTube at 1080p and above. Older phones play audio only or show black. |
| WEBM | VP9 or AV1 video, Opus audio | Chrome plays it; many Gallery apps and iPhone Photos do not | YouTube’s native format for many qualities. Convert or use VLC. |
| MOV | H.264 or HEVC, AAC | iPhone yes; Android mostly yes | Apple’s container. Fine on both platforms in practice. |
YouTube is the platform where this matters most. YouTube stores many qualities only as WEBM with VP9 or AV1. A downloader that offers “1080p” may be handing you a WEBM. TikTok, Facebook and Instagram almost always serve MP4 with H.264, which is why those downloads rarely have playback problems. If you are downloading from YouTube, our YouTube to MP4 guide shows how to get an MP4 every time.
Fixes, starting with the fastest
1. Download again and choose MP4 at 720p
If the file is WEBM or a high-resolution AV1 MP4, this single step solves it. 720p MP4 from Fistty is H.264 in almost every case and plays on any phone, including older Infinix, Tecno and itel models.
2. Install VLC
VLC is free, has no ads, and plays WEBM, MKV, HEVC and AV1 through software decoding. On Android, after installing, open the video from Files and choose VLC when asked. On iPhone, open the file in Files, tap Share, and choose VLC. Software decoding uses more battery and may stutter on very weak phones at 1080p, but for 720p it is smooth. MX Player is a good alternative on Android.
3. Convert the file to MP4
If you need the video in Gallery or Photos, for example to post as a WhatsApp status, convert it. On Android, apps such as Video Converter or VLC’s own convert feature turn WEBM into H.264 MP4 in a minute or two. On iPhone, the Shortcuts app has an “Encode Media” action that outputs an MP4. On a computer, HandBrake is free and reliable.
4. Update your phone and your player
Android and iOS add codec support in updates. A phone that could not play HEVC in 2019 may do so after a system update. Check Settings > Software update on Android or Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone, and update Gallery, Google Photos or Files from the app store.
5. Clear the player’s cache
Gallery and Google Photos cache thumbnails and metadata. A corrupted cache can make a good file look broken. Go to Settings > Apps > Gallery > Storage > Clear cache and open the video again.
6. Rename the file extension (last resort)
Occasionally a downloader saves an MP4 with a .webm name or the reverse. Renaming .webm to .mp4 does not change the content, but it can make a stubborn player attempt to open it. Only try this after VLC has confirmed the file plays.
Specific symptoms and what they mean
- Black screen with sound. Your phone decodes the audio but not the video codec. Almost always AV1 or HEVC on an older phone. Use VLC or download 720p MP4.
- Picture but no sound. The audio codec is unsupported, often Opus inside WEBM, or the download separated the audio track. See our guide to downloaded videos with no sound.
- “Can’t play video” or “Unsupported file” in Gallery. Container or codec problem. Try VLC first to confirm the file is intact.
- Plays for a few seconds then stops. The download is incomplete. Check the file size against what Fistty showed, then download again on a steadier connection.
- Stutters or freezes on playback. The phone’s processor cannot keep up with software decoding at that resolution. Download 720p instead of 1080p or 4K.
- Grey thumbnail, will not open at all. The file is probably a few KB error page. Check the size.
- iPhone shows the file in Files but not Photos. This is normal. Downloads go to Files first. Tap the file, tap Share, and choose Save Video. If Save Video is missing, the file is not an MP4 or MOV; convert it first. Our iPhone download guide covers this.
Which format to pick for each use
A few simple rules cover almost every situation in 2026.
- Watching on your phone: MP4 at 720p. Plays everywhere, good quality, reasonable size.
- WhatsApp status or chat: MP4 at 480p or 720p. WhatsApp recompresses anyway and rejects some WEBM files.
- Watching on a TV or laptop: MP4 at 1080p. Check HEVC support if the file is HEVC.
- Audio only: use the MP3 option rather than downloading a video and stripping the sound. See our YouTube to MP3 guide.
- Keeping the highest quality for editing: the largest MP4 available. Expect HEVC or AV1 and plan to use VLC or a desktop editor.
Downloading for your own offline viewing is generally fine. Re-uploading someone else’s work as your own can break platform rules and copyright, so credit the creator if you share.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my downloaded video play on my phone?
The file is usually a WEBM or uses a codec such as HEVC or AV1 that your phone cannot decode, or the download did not finish. Check the file extension and size, then download again as MP4 at 720p or open it in VLC.
What is the difference between MP4 and WEBM?
Both are containers. MP4 usually holds H.264 video and plays on every phone. WEBM holds VP9 or AV1 video and is not supported by many Gallery apps or iPhone Photos. Choose MP4 for the best compatibility.
Why does my downloaded video play sound but show a black screen?
Your phone can decode the audio but not the video codec, almost always AV1 or HEVC on an older device. Play it in VLC or download the 720p MP4 version instead.
Does VLC play any downloaded video?
VLC plays nearly every container and codec, including WEBM, MKV, HEVC and AV1, using software decoding. It is free on Android and iPhone. Very old phones may stutter at 1080p.
How do I convert a WEBM to MP4 on my phone?
On Android, use a converter app or VLC's convert feature. On iPhone, use the Shortcuts app's Encode Media action. Or download the video again from Fistty and pick MP4 directly.
Why is my downloaded video only a few KB?
You saved an error page, not a video. This happens when the temporary download link expired. Delete the small file and download again.
