Why Downloaded Videos Have No Sound (and the Fix)

A downloaded video with no sound is usually a video-only stream, a muted source, an audio codec your player cannot decode, or a simple muted player. This guide walks through each cause and the fix.

If your downloaded video has no sound, the cause is one of four things: the file is a video-only stream with the audio saved separately, the original video was muted on the platform, your player cannot decode the audio codec, or the player or phone itself is muted. Quickest check: play the file in VLC. If it has sound there, the problem is your player, not the file.

How to download a video with the sound included

Most silent downloads come from tools that grab the picture and audio as separate pieces and forget to join them. Fistty’s video downloader gives you a single MP4 with the audio already inside. Here is the method.

  1. Copy the link. In TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram, tap Share → Copy link. Before you copy, play the video in the app for a second and confirm it actually has sound.
  2. Open Fistty. Go to https://fistty.com/ or the platform page, for example the Facebook downloader or the Instagram downloader.
  3. Paste the link and tap Download. Wait for the preview to load.
  4. Choose an MP4 option, not MP3. MP3 is audio only. The MP4 options (HD, 720p, 1080p) all include sound.
  5. Avoid “video only” labels. If any option says video only or no audio, skip it. These exist for very high resolutions on some platforms where the audio is a separate stream.
  6. Find the file and test it. On Android, open it from Downloads or Gallery. On iPhone, open it from Files → Downloads. Turn the volume up and play.

If the sound is there, you are done. If it is still silent, work through the causes below in order. Each one takes about a minute to check.

Cause 1: The file is a video-only stream

This is the most common technical reason. YouTube, Facebook and some other platforms do not store one big file. They store the picture and the audio as two separate streams and your phone joins them while you watch. This system is called adaptive streaming, and it is why the quality can change mid-video on a weak connection.

When a downloader grabs only the video stream, you get a perfectly good picture with no audio track at all. It happens most with 1080p, 1440p and 4K options, because those high resolutions are almost always served without audio attached.

How to tell

Open the file in VLC and tap the audio track menu. If it says No audio track or the audio menu is empty, the file never had sound. No player setting will fix it.

The fix

Download again and pick a different option. On Fistty, the standard HD and 720p MP4 choices are merged files with the audio inside. If you need 1080p with sound from YouTube, use the YouTube downloader and choose the 1080p MP4 option rather than any option marked video only.

Cause 2: The original video was muted

Sometimes the download is fine and the source itself has no audio. This happens more than people expect.

  • Music was removed. Instagram and Facebook mute videos that use a song the creator did not have rights to use. In the app you see a message like “This video has been muted because it includes music that may be copyrighted.” The downloaded copy is silent because the public copy is silent.
  • Region blocks. Instagram Reels sometimes show “Audio unavailable in your region.” The video plays silently in your country, and the download matches what you can see.
  • Creator muted it. Some TikTok and Instagram videos are uploaded with the original sound turned off, and the music is a separate layer that only plays inside the app.
  • Snapchat Spotlight and Stories. Some Snapchat clips use licensed music that is not part of the file you can fetch.

The fix

Play the original in the app with the volume up. If it is silent there too, no downloader can add audio that does not exist. If the app plays music but the download is silent, the music was an app-side layer. In that case, you can download the song separately using TikTok to MP3 or YouTube to MP3 and combine them in a free editor like CapCut or InShot.

Cause 3: Your player cannot decode the audio codec

A video file is a container (MP4, MKV, WEBM) holding a video stream and an audio stream, each compressed with a codec. If your player understands the video codec but not the audio codec, you get picture with no sound. This is the “it plays but it is silent” problem.

Audio codec Where you meet it Plays on most phones?
AAC Most MP4 files, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook Yes, everywhere
MP3 Older files, audio-only downloads Yes
Opus YouTube WEBM files Android yes; iPhone’s default Photos player often no
Vorbis Older WEBM files Android yes; iPhone usually no
AC3 / E-AC3 (Dolby) Movie rips, some Telegram uploads Often no without VLC or MX Player
DTS Movie rips Rarely

How to tell

Open the file in VLC (free on Android and iPhone). Tap the three dots → Audio track. If a track is listed and VLC plays sound, the file is fine and your default player is the problem. VLC and MX Player carry their own decoders, so they play almost everything.

The fix

Either keep using VLC for that file, or download the video again as an MP4. Fistty gives MP4 files with AAC audio by default, which every phone, TV and WhatsApp can play. If you have a WEBM or MKV from another tool, a converter app can remux it to MP4 without losing quality. For a wider look at codec problems, see Downloaded Video Won’t Play? Codec and Player Fixes.

Cause 4: The player or phone is muted

It sounds too simple, but this catches a lot of people, especially on iPhone. Check these in order.

  • Media volume. Android has separate volumes for ringtone, notifications and media. Press the volume button while the video is playing, then tap the small arrow or gear to make sure Media is up. Ringer volume does not control videos.
  • iPhone silent switch and Action button. The switch on the left side of older iPhones, or the Action button on newer ones, mutes many apps. Some players respect it and some do not. Flip it and try again.
  • Muted browser preview. Browsers mute video previews by default. If you watched the file in Chrome or Safari and heard nothing, tap the speaker icon on the player. The downloaded file is fine.
  • Bluetooth. Your phone may be sending audio to earbuds or a speaker in another room. Pull down the control centre and check the audio output.
  • Gallery app mute memory. Samsung Gallery and some Xiaomi players remember the last mute state. Look for a speaker icon with a line through it in the corner of the video and tap it.
  • Do Not Disturb or Focus. Some modes lower media volume on certain phones. Turn them off and test.

If the video has sound in one app and not another, you have found the culprit. Set VLC or MX Player as the default for video files and move on.

Cause 5: The file was cut short

A download that stopped early can leave a file with a damaged end section, where the audio header sits in some formats. The video may play silently or stop part way through. The signs are a file size that looks too small for the length, or a player that shows the wrong duration.

The fix is a fresh download on a stable connection. Wi-Fi is best. If you are on mobile data in Nigeria or Ghana, pick 720p or 480p so the file finishes before the network drops. See Download Stuck at 0% or 99%? for more on unfinished downloads.

Quick checklist

  1. Play the file in VLC. Sound? Change your default player.
  2. No audio track listed in VLC? Download again and choose an MP4 option with audio.
  3. Silent in the original app too? The source is muted. Get the song separately as MP3.
  4. Media volume up, silent switch off, Bluetooth disconnected, browser preview unmuted.
  5. File too small or duration wrong? Redownload on a stable connection.

Nine times out of ten in 2026, the answer is step 1 or step 2. Fistty’s MP4 downloads include the audio, so if a file from another tool is silent, pasting the same link into Fistty is usually the fastest fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my downloaded video have no sound?

Either the file is a video-only stream without an audio track, the original video was muted on the platform, your player cannot decode the audio codec, or your phone's media volume or player is muted. Testing the file in VLC tells you which.

How do I add sound to a video that downloaded without audio?

You cannot add audio that was never in the file, but you can redownload the video as a merged MP4 with audio, or download the song as MP3 and combine the two in a free editor like CapCut.

Why do 1080p and 4K downloads have no audio?

Platforms like YouTube serve high resolutions as separate video and audio streams. If a tool downloads only the video stream, the file is silent. Choose an MP4 option that includes audio instead.

Why is my Instagram Reel download silent?

Instagram mutes videos that use copyrighted music or music unavailable in your region. If the Reel is silent in the app, the download will be silent too.

Which player plays every audio codec?

VLC and MX Player carry their own decoders and play almost every codec, including Opus, Vorbis and AC3, on both Android and iPhone.

Does Fistty download videos with sound?

Yes. Fistty's MP4 options include the audio track. Only the MP3 option is audio-only, and any option marked video only should be skipped.
