For an Instagram video download in HD, copy the video or reel link, paste it into Fistty’s Instagram downloader, and pick the 1080p option when the quality buttons appear. Fistty pulls the highest stream Instagram has for that video, so you get the same quality the creator uploaded, with no watermark and no login.
This guide explains how to pick the right quality, why some videos top out at 720p, and how to tell a real HD download from a blurry one.

How to download an Instagram video in 1080p on Fistty
- Open the video or reel in Instagram. It can be a reel, a feed video, or a video inside a carousel post.
- Copy the link. Tap the paper-plane Share icon and tap Copy link, or tap the three dots (top right of a feed post, right edge of a reel) and choose Copy link. The account must be public.
- Open Fistty’s Instagram downloader. Visit Fistty’s Instagram video and photo downloader in any browser.
- Paste the link and tap Download. Fistty fetches the video and lists every quality Instagram has stored for it.
- Choose 1080p. Tap the highest option in the list. If you see only 720p, that is the best Instagram has for this video (more on that below).
- Save the file. On Android it lands in Downloads and shows in Gallery. On iPhone, Safari puts it in the Files app; open it, tap Share, then Save Video to move it into Photos.
Why downloaded Instagram videos often look blurry
Instagram does not store one copy of a video. When a creator uploads, Instagram makes several versions, usually 1080p, 720p, 480p and sometimes 360p, and serves the one that fits the viewer’s connection. Many downloaders grab the first stream they find, which is often the smallest. The result is a soft, pixelated clip that looks worse than it did in the app.
Fistty lists all the versions it finds, so you can pick the top one. That is the single most important step for a sharp download. If a tool never shows you quality options, assume it is giving you whatever is fastest, not whatever is best.
Two other things cause blur after download:
- WhatsApp and Messenger compression. If you send the downloaded file as a normal video message, the app shrinks it. Send it as a document (file) instead to keep the quality.
- Viewing on a bigger screen. A 1080 x 1920 vertical video looks perfect on a phone but will show its limits on a 4K TV. That is normal.
Why some videos are only 720p (and 4K is never offered)
Instagram’s rules in 2026 are simple: the maximum it stores is 1080p. Even if a creator uploads 4K footage, Instagram scales it down to 1080 pixels wide. So no downloader can give you 4K from Instagram, and any site that promises it is renaming a 1080p file.
Within that cap, the quality you can get depends on what the creator did:
| What the creator did | Best quality available |
|---|---|
| Uploaded 1080p or higher on a good connection | 1080p |
| Uploaded 720p footage | 720p |
| Uploaded on a slow connection with “Upload at highest quality” off | 720p or lower |
| Reposted a screen recording or a downloaded clip | Usually 720p or lower |
| Shared a reel to a story | Story copy is more compressed than the reel |
If Fistty shows 720p as the top option, that is not a limit of the tool. It is the best file Instagram has. For a sharper copy, look for the original on the creator’s YouTube or TikTok, where limits are higher. The guide on downloading TikTok videos in HD and 4K covers that platform.
How to check the resolution of your download
Do not trust your eyes alone. Check the file:
- Android: Open the video in Gallery or Files, tap the three dots, and tap Details or Info. Look for Resolution. 1080 x 1920 is Full HD for a vertical video; 1920 x 1080 for a landscape one.
- iPhone: Open the video in Photos, swipe up or tap the “i” icon. The resolution shows next to the file name. In Files, long-press the file and tap Get Info.
- PC or Mac: Right-click the file, choose Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) and look under Details or More Info.
Bitrate also matters. Two 1080p files can look different if one has a much lower bitrate. Fistty gives you Instagram’s own file, so the bitrate is whatever Instagram encoded, usually 3–8 Mbps for reels.
HD versus data: when 1080p is worth it
A 30-second reel is roughly 20–40 MB at 1080p and 10–20 MB at 720p. On a phone screen the two look very close. Pick 1080p when you plan to edit the clip, show it on a TV or laptop, or repost it where quality counts. Pick 720p when you are on mobile data, you only want to watch it once, or you are posting it as a WhatsApp status, which compresses it anyway. The 720p vs 1080p vs 4K guide goes deeper into the trade-off.
If you are downloading many reels, do it on Wi-Fi. The Android reels guide has more data-saving tips.
Settings on the creator’s side that affect HD
You cannot change these for someone else’s reel, but knowing them explains why quality varies, and they help if you download your own videos:
- Upload at highest quality. In Instagram, go to Settings > Media quality (or Data usage and media quality) and turn on Upload at highest quality. When this is off, Instagram uploads a smaller file on slow connections to save time, and the 1080p version is never created.
- Source footage. A reel shot in the Instagram camera is capped at 1080p. Footage shot in the phone camera app at 4K and edited outside Instagram usually survives the upload as a cleaner 1080p file with a higher bitrate.
- Re-uploads. Every time a video is downloaded and re-posted, Instagram compresses it again. A reel that has been through three accounts can look soft even at 1080p.
- Stories versus reels. Instagram compresses stories harder than reels. If a creator posted the same clip as a reel and a story, download the reel.
If you are downloading your own content to back it up, always keep the original camera file as well. The Instagram copy is a compressed version, not the master.
Photos, carousels and the HD question
The same Fistty page downloads Instagram photos. Instagram stores photos at up to 1080 pixels wide, and Fistty gives you that full-size JPG rather than the thumbnail. For carousel posts with mixed photos and videos, Fistty lists each item with its own button, and the quality options apply to each video separately.
One last note: Fistty only fetches content from public accounts. Private posts are served only to approved, logged-in followers, and no downloader can reach them. Fistty never asks for your password. Downloading for personal offline use is generally fine; re-uploading someone else’s HD video as your own may break Instagram’s rules and copyright law.
