To download Twitter GIF files from X, tap the Share icon under the post, tap Copy link, paste the link into the box on the Fistty home page, and tap Download. One thing to know first: X does not store GIFs as .gif files. It converts every GIF into a short, silent MP4 video that loops. So what you download is an MP4 that plays exactly like the GIF did. If you need a real .gif file, for example for a chat app that only accepts GIFs, this guide shows how to convert it in a minute.
Download it now with Fistty. Paste the link, tap Download. No app, no login, free.
How to download a GIF from X (Twitter) on Fistty
The process is identical to downloading a normal X video, because to X a GIF is a video. The post must be from a public account.
- Copy the post link. Open the post with the GIF in the X app. In the row of icons under it, tap the Share icon (the arrow pointing up out of a box) and then tap Copy link. On the x.com website, click the same icon and choose Copy link. The link looks like x.com/username/status/ followed by a long number.
- Open Fistty. Go to https://fistty.com/ in Safari, Chrome or any browser. There is no separate X page; the home page accepts x.com and twitter.com links.
- Paste and tap Download. Tap inside the link box, hold, tap Paste, then tap Download. Fistty loads a preview of the GIF.
- Choose the file. For GIFs you will usually see one or two MP4 options rather than the three resolutions a full video gets, because X keeps GIFs small. Tap the highest one shown.
- Save the file. On Android the MP4 goes to the Downloads folder and appears in Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves it to the Files app under Downloads; tap it, tap Share, then Save Video to move it to Photos. It will play as a silent looping clip, which is exactly what the GIF looked like on X.
If an MP4 is fine for your purpose, which it is for WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, iMessage and most video editors, you are done. If you specifically need a .gif file, keep reading.
Why X turns GIFs into MP4 (and why that is good for you)
When someone attaches a GIF to a post, or picks one from the GIF search inside X, the platform converts it to MP4 before storing it. There are good reasons.
- Size. The GIF format is very old and very inefficient. A three-second clip can be 5 to 15 MB as a .gif but under 1 MB as an MP4. That saves X enormous bandwidth and saves you data.
- Quality. A .gif can only show 256 colours per frame, which is why GIFs look grainy. MP4 keeps the full colour range.
- Playback. Phones and browsers play MP4 with hardware acceleration, so it is smoother and uses less battery.
The post still carries a small “GIF” label in the corner, and the clip loops with no sound, so to a viewer it behaves like a GIF. But the file underneath is video, and that is what Fistty, and every other downloader, gives you. There is no secret .gif hidden on X’s servers to fetch.
For most uses the MP4 is better. It is smaller, sharper and plays everywhere. The only time you genuinely need a .gif is when a specific app or website insists on the format, such as a forum avatar, an older chat app, a Slack custom emoji, or a GIF keyboard that only accepts .gif uploads.
How to convert the MP4 to a real .gif
Here are the simplest honest options, from easiest to most control. Each takes under a minute for a short clip.
| Method | Works on | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online converter (ezgif.com, CloudConvert) | Any browser | No install; options for size, frame rate and trimming | Uploads your file; ads on some sites; file size limits |
| GIPHY app or website | iPhone, Android, web | Free, simple, can also share directly | Needs a free account; GIF is hosted publicly on GIPHY |
| iPhone Shortcuts app | iPhone, iPad | Built in; the “Video to GIF” shortcut is in the gallery | Few quality settings |
| GIF Maker apps (ImgPlay, GIF Maker by Kayak) | iPhone, Android | Trim, crop, add text | Free versions add a small watermark or ads |
| ffmpeg on a computer | Windows, Mac, Linux | Full control, no upload, no watermark | Command line; takes a few minutes to learn |
Quick steps with an online converter
- Open ezgif.com or a similar site and choose Video to GIF.
- Tap Choose file and pick the MP4 you downloaded. On iPhone it is in Files, under Downloads; on Android, in Downloads.
- Tap Upload video. Set the start and end time if you only want part of the clip, pick a size (480 pixels wide is a good default), and a frame rate (10 to 15 frames per second keeps the file small).
- Tap Convert to GIF, then Save. The .gif lands in the same Downloads folder as the MP4.
Quick steps on iPhone with Shortcuts
Open the Shortcuts app, tap Gallery, search for Video to GIF, and add it. Run it, pick the MP4 from Photos (save it there first with Share, then Save Video), and the shortcut shows the GIF with a Share option. Tap Share, then Save Image, and the .gif appears in Photos.
Keep the GIF small
A .gif grows fast. A five-second clip at full size and 30 frames per second can be 20 MB or more and will be rejected by many apps. Trim to the frames you need, drop the width to 320 to 480 pixels, and use 10 to 15 frames per second. A good sticker-sized GIF is under 2 MB.
Troubleshooting and limits
Most problems with X GIFs are the same as with X videos. Fistty cannot download from protected accounts (a padlock next to the name), from deleted posts, or from posts that embed a GIF hosted elsewhere via a link rather than attaching it. If the preview loads but the file does not save, make sure you are in Safari or Chrome rather than the browser inside the X app, and that your phone has storage permission and free space. The full fix list is in X (Twitter) Video Not Downloading? 7 Fixes.
If the GIF came from the GIF search button inside X, it is usually a GIPHY or Tenor clip. Fistty still downloads the MP4 X stored, but you can also search GIPHY or Tenor for the same GIF and save the original .gif there directly, which skips the conversion step. Device-specific saving tips are in How to Download X (Twitter) Videos on iPhone and How to Download X (Twitter) Videos on Android.
On rights: GIFs are usually short clips from films, shows or sports, and sharing them for reactions is accepted everywhere. Saving one for personal use is generally fine. Using someone’s original animation commercially without permission is not. Fistty responds to takedown requests through its DMCA page, and it never asks for your X login or asks you to install anything, in 2026 or ever.

Frequently asked questions
How do I save a GIF from Twitter (X) to my phone?
Tap Share under the post, tap Copy link, paste the link on fistty.com/ and tap Download. The file saves to Downloads and Gallery on Android or to Files on iPhone.
Why is my downloaded Twitter GIF an MP4 file?
X converts every GIF into a short silent MP4 before storing it, so there is no .gif file on X's servers. The MP4 loops and looks exactly like the GIF did.
How do I turn the MP4 into a real .gif?
Use a free converter such as ezgif.com, the GIPHY app, or the Video to GIF shortcut on iPhone. Keep it short and around 480 pixels wide so the file stays small.
Why does my downloaded GIF have no sound?
GIFs on X never have sound. The silent MP4 is the complete file, not a broken download.
Can I download GIFs from a protected X account?
No. Protected accounts show posts only to approved followers, so no online downloader can access them.
Is Fistty free for downloading X GIFs?
Yes. Fistty is a free website with no app and no login, and it never asks for your X password.
