Video Downloader Not Working? Universal Troubleshooting Guide

When any video downloader fails, the cause is usually one of ten things. This checklist finds the real reason in a few minutes and tells you the fix for each one.

If your video downloader is not working, the problem is almost always one of these: the link points to a profile or playlist instead of a video, the video is private, the story has expired, the content is region-blocked, your browser blocked the file, your storage is full, or your data connection dropped. Run the checklist below in order. Each check takes under a minute and most downloads work again by step four.

How to download a video the right way before you troubleshoot

Half of all failed downloads come from a small mistake in the first step. Do a clean attempt with Fistty’s video downloader before you dig into fixes. If this works, you are done.

  1. Copy the link from the video itself. On TikTok, tap Share on the video and then Copy link. On YouTube, tap Share under the player and then Copy link. On Facebook, tap the three dots on the post and choose Copy link. On Instagram, tap the three dots above a Reel and choose Copy link. Do not copy the link from the profile page or the address bar of a feed.
  2. Open the matching Fistty page. Use Fistty’s TikTok downloader, the YouTube downloader, the Facebook downloader or the Instagram downloader. The home page accepts all of them.
  3. Paste and tap Download. Wait for the preview thumbnail. If the preview appears, the link is good and the platform allowed access.
  4. Choose a quality. Pick MP4 at 720p if you are not sure. It plays on every phone.
  5. Confirm the browser prompt. Chrome, Safari and Samsung Internet each show a small sheet asking you to confirm. Tap Download.
  6. Check where it landed. On Android the file is in Downloads and appears in Gallery. On iPhone with Safari it is in the Files app under Downloads, unless you chose to save it to Photos.

The diagnostic checklist: find the real cause

Match what you see on screen to the row below. The table tells you what it means and jumps you to the fix.

What you see Most likely cause Fix
“Invalid link” or “Video not found” Wrong link type, private video, or deleted video Checks 1, 2 and 3
Preview loads, Download does nothing Browser blocked the file or a pop-up blocker is active Check 5
Download starts, stops at 0% or 99% Flaky data connection or low storage Checks 6 and 7
“This content is not available in your country” Region block on the platform Check 4
File saved but will not play Codec or format problem Check 8
Nothing happens at all, page looks frozen Browser data-saver, old cache, or extension Checks 5 and 9

Check 1: Is it a video link or a profile, playlist or hashtag link?

A downloader needs the address of one specific video. These links will not work:

  • A TikTok profile link such as tiktok.com/@username
  • A YouTube playlist link containing list= but no v=, or a channel link
  • A Facebook page or group link
  • An Instagram profile link or a hashtag page

Go back to the app, open the exact video, and copy the link from its Share menu. Our guide to the “Video not found” and “Invalid link” errors shows what each correct link looks like.

Check 2: Is the video private, friends-only or age-restricted?

No online downloader can fetch a private TikTok, a friends-only Facebook video, a private Instagram account’s Reel or a private YouTube video. The platform only shows those to logged-in people the creator approved. Fistty never asks for your password, so it cannot see them either. If you can only watch the video while logged in, this is your answer. Ask the creator to share the file directly.

Check 3: Has the story or live stream expired?

Instagram and Facebook stories disappear after 24 hours. Snapchat stories do the same. A TikTok LIVE or YouTube live stream has no file to download until the creator publishes a replay. If the link worked yesterday and fails today, the content is gone from the platform, and no tool can recover it.

Check 4: Is the video blocked in your region?

Some music videos on YouTube and some Facebook posts are only visible in certain countries. If the platform shows “not available in your country” when you open the link in your browser, the downloader sees the same block. A video that is available where you are will download normally.

Check 5: Is your browser blocking the file?

This is the most common cause when the preview loads but the Download button appears to do nothing.

  • Chrome on Android: look for a bar at the bottom saying “Download blocked” and tap Download anyway. Also check Settings > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects.
  • Safari on iPhone: tap the aA or page icon in the address bar and make sure “Block Pop-ups” is not stopping the download sheet. Our Safari download guide covers the missing download button in detail.
  • Opera Mini: Extreme data-saving mode strips large files. Switch to High or Off.
  • Browser extensions: on desktop, an ad blocker can hide the download button. Try a private window with extensions off.

Check 6: Is your storage full?

Android shows “Not enough storage” or quietly fails. iPhone shows “Cannot download” in Files. Delete old videos, empty the Gallery recycle bin, or clear WhatsApp media. You need at least two or three times the file size free, because the browser writes a temporary copy first.

Check 7: Is your data connection dropping?

A download that stops at the same percentage every time is a network problem, not a downloader problem. Move closer to a window, switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or wait a few minutes. If you are on a slow MTN or Airtel connection, pick 480p so the file finishes before the connection drops. See the download stuck at 0% or 99% guide.

Check 8: Did the file save but refuse to play?

A WEBM file or a video encoded with HEVC or AV1 may not play on older phones. Download again and choose MP4. If there is no choice, install VLC, which plays almost everything.

Check 9: Is an old cache or app version in the way?

Clear your browser cache (Chrome: Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data). If you copied the link from an outdated version of the TikTok or Instagram app, update the app; old apps sometimes produce links that redirect in odd ways.

Check 10: Is the downloader itself down?

Platforms change how they serve video every few weeks, and every downloader needs a short time to catch up. If every link fails on one site, try the same link on a different platform page or come back in an hour. Fistty updates quickly, but no downloader is immune.

Quick fixes by device

Each device has one or two settings that cause most failures.

  • iPhone: downloads land in Files, not Photos. Open Files > Downloads, tap the video, tap Share, and choose Save Video to move it to Photos. Our iPhone download guide explains the Files vs Photos split.
  • Android (Chrome): allow Chrome to store files when asked, and check that “Ask where to save files” is not sending them to a removed SD card.
  • Samsung: Gallery may take a few seconds to show the Download album. Pull down to refresh.
  • Infinix, Tecno, itel: the built-in Phone Master cleaner can delete the Download folder during a “junk clean”. Turn off auto-clean.

What a working download should look like

In 2026 a normal Fistty download goes like this: paste the link, see the preview within two or three seconds, tap a quality, confirm the browser sheet, and watch a progress notification finish. A one-minute TikTok at 720p is about 15 to 25 MB and takes under ten seconds on a decent 4G connection. If your experience differs at any of those points, the checklist above tells you which step broke.

One last note. Downloading for your own offline viewing is generally fine. Re-uploading someone else’s video as your own can break platform rules and copyright. Fistty’s DMCA page explains how rights holders can request removal.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my video downloader not working?

The most common causes are a profile or playlist link instead of a video link, a private video, an expired story, a region block, a browser blocking the file, full storage, or a dropped data connection. Work through the checklist in this guide to find which one applies.

Why does the downloader say the video is not available?

Either the video is private, it has been deleted, it is a story that expired after 24 hours, or it is blocked in your country. Check whether you can open the link in your browser without logging in.

Can a video downloader download private videos?

No. Private, friends-only and age-restricted videos are only shown to approved, logged-in viewers. No online downloader can fetch them, and any site that claims it can should not be trusted with your password.

Why does the download button do nothing?

Your browser is probably blocking the file or a pop-up. Look for a 'Download blocked' bar in Chrome, allow pop-ups for the site in Safari, or switch Opera Mini out of Extreme data-saving mode.

Which video format should I choose so the download always works?

MP4 at 720p. It is supported by every phone and video player. WEBM and HEVC files may fail to play on older devices.

Do I need an app to fix video downloads?

No. Fistty works in any browser with no app and no login. If a download fails, the fix is almost always a link, browser, storage or network setting on your phone.
